I am a junior and I am majoring in Chemistry and am planning on minoring in Education. This is because I am planning on becoming a high school teacher after graduating. I like Chemistry because I like to understand why the world works the way it does and chemistry explains a lot of what happens in everything around us. Also I like playing around with the chemicals in the lab because it kind of gives me the feeling that I can create stuff. I realize that most people find it boring but I think its pretty cool.
I am from Croghan, NY, which is a small town about an hour and a half from Canton. Basically Croghan is known for its bologna, which is delicious even though only people from Northern New York know about it. Other than that we have a lot of small dairy farms like the one I grew up on.
My hobbies aren't really that interesting. Mostly I just like to listen to all types of music, watch movies, hang out with friends, watch sports, and read. That is mostly what I do with my free time but I'm usually open to trying new things.
I've had fairly good experiences with getting feedback but that is mostly with things like papers and stuff that I wrote for school. So the professors weren't judging how I wrote, they were just looking for the content. I have written a few things for fun but mostly it was working with other people to come up with silly skits and things like that. For the most part people seemed to think those were fairly funny.
The authors that have influenced me the most are fantasy writers like Tolkien. He really impresses me because he created his own world that is completely different from ours but when your reading the books it almost feels like it could be real. Also he goes into a lot of detail about things but it doesn't feel like he is just rambling. All the details seem like they are important to the story even if they aren't vital.
I think that good writing can be almost any style so long as it makes the reader feel like they are involved in the story and gets the point of the story across well without wasting the reader's time. Also I think good writing is when the author is very descriptive but not to the point of overloading the reader with details. Also I appreciate writing that is fast moving and at times exciting.
From this class I would like to learn how to get my point across clearer. Sometimes I have trouble using the right words to make my point. Also I would like to learn what some of the different styles of writing are.
